Maintaining a healthy diet while on the road

One of the most difficult challenges in my life since the heart failure has been maintaining a healthy diet. I did not have anything that even resembled such a thing to be completely honest and I am ashamed to admit that.

My lifestyle was chaotic, to say the least, and I liked it that way apparently because I nurtured it instead of stopping occasionally to get a view of what was really going on. Working ridiculous hours during the day, playing hard at night, and eating mostly what was fast and easy. Now to me at the time, fast and easy was a quick stop at whatever trash bin (fast food restaurant) was along the way. Fostering an addiction to carbohydrates and sugar (drinking Coca-Cola like it was water) was my drug, with shots of vodka and whiskey as my dessert. My exercise was lifting my hand to my mouth. The stress was unreal, and my mind couldn’t even begin to comprehend what was going on in my life.

So fast forward years ahead to the choice of stop and make a drastic change or die. I didn’t really know the first thing about healthy eating, so I embarked on a quest to learn how to change that. Now that didn’t come quick enough and having only learned the basics of what was killing me, I was slow to adopt the most important changes in my diet. What are they you most likely wondering? The hardest thing to do… drop carbohydrates! They are in everything processed making them incredibly abundant, and the response our brains have to carbs is even worse. Carbs are just like cocaine to our brain! That is right, we register carbs the very same way we register cocaine leading us down a long and dangerous road of addiction to the very thing that is supposed to be keeping us alive.

In reality, this is not a complicated subject. The answer to what you should avoid is simple:

  • Avoid processed foods
  • Avoid breads
  • Avoid potatoes
  • Avoid white rice
  • Avoid pasta
  • Avoid high fructose corn syrup
  • Avoid sugar or sugar substitutes

More on this subject soon! Peace and love to you all!
